Go plastic free this July
The Environmental Forum, made up of Anchor residents, meet with members of Anchor鈥檚 sustainability team to increase awareness of green issues that affect us all. They鈥檝e asked us to introduce a monthly article about small changes you can make to go greener.
Plastic is everywhere these days, near our food, in our homes and in our clothes. But have you ever stopped to think about where it ends up?
Every year, plastic waste makes its way into our oceans, streets, and rivers. When plastic is used and disposed, it breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics, which have been found in fish, sea salt, drinking water and even the air we breathe.
Everyday items like packaging, bottles, bags, and clothes made from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon shed microplastics that slip into our waterways, harming wildlife and polluting our planet.
But the good news is we can all help reduce plastic pollution, and Plastic Free July is the perfect time to start.
Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people cut down on single-use plastics at home and in the community. The challenge is simple: choose just one single-use plastic to stop using this month. Small swaps really do add up when we all take part.听
Here are a few easy ways to get started:听
In the kitchen听
- Buy loose fruit and veg instead of packaged ones at the supermarkets听
- Try baking your favourite treat and use reusable silicone trays or muffin cases听
- Store leftovers in reusable containers instead of clingfilm听
- Switch to loose-leaf tea or plastic-free teabags (used leaves also make great compost!)听
Cleaning & washing听
- Find a local refill shop to refill washing-up liquid, detergents, shampoo and more听
- Make a DIY all-purpose cleaner with vinegar, water and essential oils听
- Swap liquid soap in plastic containers for bar soap听
- Try plastic-free dental care such as bamboo toothbrushes and silk floss 听
On the go听
- Carry a refillable water bottle or coffee cup听
- Take your reusable bags when you go shopping听
- Pick up litter in your local park or street to stop plastic ending up in our ecosystems听
Everyday choices听
- Choose natural fibres like cotton, wool or linen when buying clothes or homeware听
- Repurpose old clothes and textiles (old t-shirts make great cleaning cloths!)听
- Look for plastic-free toys and treats for your pets and bulk-buy to reduce packaging听
